Starling Spurlock Cemetery

(submitted by & photos by Gerald & Tammy Westmoreland)

Located on E. Smith Ferry Road about 1/4 mile west of Fanny McGuffee Road. 313959N, 0900209W.

"Starling Spurlock, a freed slave, chose to remain with his former owner, Elam Scarborough, who cared for him all his days. At his death, neither Blacks nor Whites would allow him to be buried in their cemeteries, so he was given this plot in perpetuity and a wrought iron fence enclosed it. Birds, Butterflies 'N Blooms Garden Club referbished this site in early 2005."
